If a local girls’ rock camp doesn’t find a new space soon, organizers may have to cancel this summer’s edition.

Rock Camp for Girls co-founder Jennifer Duffin said the usual venue for the camp, the Ukrainian Federation on Hutchison Street in Montreal’s Mile End, can’t accommodate them this year.

The girl empowerment program had been held there for each of its previous four editions.

A spokesperson for the venue said the rock camp usually takes over the entire building, but only one part of the community centre would be available this year.

Duffin said there was no conflict with the venue, but the camp needs to find another home.

During the week-long camp, campers aged 10-17 learn bass, drums, guitar, keyboards or vocals.

Last year, 35 campers registered. The girls are grouped together in bands and compose an original song over the course of the week, performing it at a showcase on the last day.

“We make a lot of noise. We’re quite noisy, so it’s difficult to find space sometimes,” Duffin said.

She said Rock Camp for Girls has very specific needs in terms of space, among which is access to a kitchen.

The volunteer-run camp also has a tight budget.

Duffin said the camp is waiting to settle its space issues before opening up registration.
