An 82-year-old woman who was walking to church in a Lévis, Que., residential neighbourhood this morning died after she was struck by a dump truck involved in snow-removal work.

The truck driver, who is in his thirties, is being treated for shock following the incident at 6 a.m. ET at the intersection of Monseigneur Gosselin and du Mont Marie streets, in the city on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, opposite Quebec City.

The man was driving one of two trucks clearing snowbanks near the Collège de Lévis, a private school. One truck was picking up snow and blowing it into the other truck.

Lévis police Const. Éric Laliberté said one of the trucks backed up to reposition itself and when it moved forward again, the woman was hit.

He said it's not clear if she somehow ended up between both trucks.

Neither truck driver saw her.

Marc-André Larrivée, the owner of the sub-contracting company responsible for snow-clearing, said the driver is very shaken by the incident.

"He never saw the person in question," he said.

According to Larrivée, the driver of the truck that hit the woman is unconsolable and the driver of the other truck also had to be replaced on the job.

Police say speed was not a factor and are on the scene investigating the incident.
