Jacques-Cartier Bridge reopens to traffic

Work crews have removed the large metal beam that had fallen onto the lanes of Montreal's Jacques-Cartier Bridge Tuesday morning.
According to Quebec provincial police, a large truck hit a road sign which led to the structure's partial collapse on the southbound lane around 9:30 a.m.
The metal beam was used to hold electric lane signs and direct drivers into the proper lanes during traffic hours.
Grégory Gomez Del Prado, spokesman for the provincial police, said authorities decided to close the bridge to traffic because the structure covers the bridge's width.
A large bin carried by the truck also fell onto the lane after striking the road sign.
Gomez Del Prado said it is too soon to know if the driver will face fines or charges.
The Montreal police, Longueuil police and provincial police were rerouting traffic to the Victoria Bridge and the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel.Share Tools
