The provincial and municipal governments announced $60-million for a new road in Pierrefonds, that will connect Gouin Boulevard and Highway 40.
The mayor of Pierrefonds-Roxboro, Monique Worth, said the road will reduce traffic congestion and give West Island drivers better access to downtown. She has been pushing for this road for a long time, she said.
Worth said the road will include lanes reserved for public transit. She also said it will allow for new commercial and residential developments, including 2,000 affordable units.
Not everyone's happy with the announcement.
Martha Bond, with a local residents group, said she doubts the road will ease congestion.
"It will leave a legacy for our children of more debt, more destruction of green spaces, expensive, poorly built construction," said Bond.
Bond also said she is skeptical of the provincial government's intent, since the investment comes on the eve of an expected election announcement.
The plan must still undergo an environmental assessment. Construction is expected to begin in 2014.
