A teacher at Cavelier-De LaSalle high school in Montreal has been fired after showing a Grade 10 class the video believed to depict the death and dismemberment of Jun Lin.

The firing Thursday comes a day after the teacher was suspended. Some of his students had rallied Thursday to protest the suspension, which they said was unfair since the class had voted to watch the video.

The 11 minutes of video footage, which was posted on the internet on May 25, depicts a man police allege is Luka Rocco Magnotta stabbing and dismembering another man.

Police believe the victim shown in the video is 33-year-old university student Jun Lin, whose torso was discovered several days later inside a suitcase behind a Montreal apartment. Lin's hands and feet were mailed in separate packages to Ottawa and B.C.

Students at Cavelier-de LaSalle high school in one of the city's southwestern boroughs watched the video on June 4 after the 29-year-old teacher took a vote among the students.

One student told CBC News that everyone in the class voted in favour of watching it.

Another said three students voted against it, but the teacher went with the majority.

After watching the video, the class had a discussion about it and its dissemination online, students said.

In a release issued nine days after the incident, the school board condemned the screening and said it took immediate action by suspending the teacher and bringing in a crisis team to counsel students.

Magnotta is in Germany awaiting extradition back to Canada to face charges in Lin's death.
