Montreal police are looking for elderly victims of a man whom they suspect is responsible for a wave of thefts in senior citizens' residences, dating back to the spring of 2011.

Police have charged Normand Lafleur, 48, with numerous counts of theft and break-and-enter, following his arrest on Feb. 22.

Police said a man gained entry into apartment buildings by buzzing until someone let him in or by waiting for a resident to leave the building. The man then went systematically through the building, floor by floor, looking for doors left unlocked, then making off with purses and wallets found in unoccupied apartments.

Police said if the man encountered anyone in an apartment, he pretended he had opened the door by mistake, claiming to be a maintenance man.

Police said they believe many victims have not come forward, and they are asking anyone with information to call 911.
