Quebec's Labour Relations Board has accredited a fifth Couche-Tard dépanneur — this one in Pierrefonds, on Montreal's West Island.

Of the four other convenience stores granted union status in the past year, two have been shut down by the retail chain, which said the outlets were losing money.

The two unionized stores that remain open are still without a contract for employees.

A conciliator has been appointed to help both sides arrive at a first collective agreement.

The CSN labour group, which represents workers, says contract demands include:

  • Four days of sick leave a year.
  • A commitment to respect the existing labour code.
  • Pay increase to $12.50 per hour, after four years' service.
  • Installment of panic buttons, in case of an armed robbery.
