Four people were taken to hospital after a fire broke out in a home in the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough early Monday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the home near the intersection of Saint-Urbain and Bernard streets at around 1:20 a.m.

The building and an adjacent structure were evacuated.

"They had to make sure that, if the fire [spread], they had to protect the neighbours,” she said.

About 10 people were forced out of their homes, said Const. Mélanie Martineau of the Montreal police.

Three people were taken to hospital to be treated for burns and another received treatment for breathing issues.

All residents were allowed to return to their homes later Monday morning.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined, and the arson squad is investigating.
