Two prominent Montreal politicians are defending their French language skills after a popular radio host said their level of French is insulting.

On his radio show and on Twitter, Benoît Dutrizac took aim at Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce mayor Michael Applebaum and city councillor Marvin Rotrand, accusing them of butchering the language.

Rotrand said the comments came out of nowhere.

"Why me and why Michael Applebaum and why out of the blue?" he asked.

Dutrizac's comments came after reports that managers at the Caisse de dépôt et placement and the National Bank were unable to speak French.

But Rotrand said he does speak French, and doesn't understand why he was targetted by Dutrizac.

"In my case, it's the opposite. I'm being criticized because I do speak French. I find that rather strange," Rotrand said.

Dutrizac did not respond to CBC's request for an interview.
