A Bromont municipal police officer has died after he was hit by a truck on the side of a road Thursday, Quebec provincial police say.
Vincent Roy, 37, had just stopped a vehicle for a highway infraction and was out of his car on the side of the road when he was struck by a cube van.
The accident happened at about 11:30 a.m. ET on Highway 139 near Adamsville, Que., in the Eastern Townships about 100 kilometres southeast of Montreal.
"He was giving back the driver's licence, registration and insurance papers," said Sûreté du Québec spokesman Louis-Philippe Ruel. "The truck left the road and went on to the shoulder and actually hit the patrol car first and afterwards hit the officer."
The truck remained on the scene as police investigated, and its female driver was interviewed by police at a nearby station.
Adamsville, near Granby, Que. Google MapsRuel said neither alcohol and speeding were factors and police are treating the incident as an accident.
Roy leaves behind two children, aged 8 and 10. The former RCMP officer had been working in Bromont for several months, police said.
Police and officials with the province's workplace health and safety board were on the scene investigating Thursday afternoon.
All 20 officers in the Bromont police force are being treated for shock and will not work for at least 24 hours. Provincial police will take over their shifts.
