A woman who has lived in Montreal for the past five years has been ordered deported back to her native Mexico Tuesday, but her deportation was delayed after she was taken to hospital.

Paola Ortiz was scheduled to leave on a 10:10 a.m. Aeroméxico flight after a Federal Court judge refused to suspend her deportation order during an appeal hearing Monday afternoon.

At the airport, she was not feeling well and medical personnel came to check her before calling an ambulance. Ortiz was taken away on a stretcher and transferred to hospital.

It's not clear when Ortiz's flight will be rescheduled.

The 31-year-old has two young children who were born in Canada and she has decided to leave them behind. They will stay with Ortiz's sister.

Ortiz came to Canada in 2006 to escape what she called an abusive relationship, and she told authorities that a former boyfriend, a Mexican federal police officer, beat her, sexually assaulted her and once kept her imprisoned for several days.

Ortiz's refugee status was denied by immigration authorities, who ruled Mexico offers adequate protection for victims of conjugal violence.

Ortiz said she fears for her safety in Mexico, and for that reason, she has decided to not take her two children with her. She is also worried they will not have access to proper care in her native country. Her four-year-old daughter has hearing problems and her two-year-old son was recently diagnosed with autism.
