A group of more than 100 cyclists in Montreal's West End want the city to improve what they see as an extremely dangerous intersection.

The group is expected to attend Monday night's Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce city council meeting to ask borough mayor Michael Applebaum to find a solution.

They say the intersection at Décarie Boulevard and de Maisonneuve Boulevard near the Vendome Metro station in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce is an accident waiting to happen.

The bike path heading east on de Maisonneuve suddenly ends, and cyclists have to choose between making a left turn into heavy traffic or walking.

Cyclists in NDG say both options are dangerous.

"We really need a way to get through here without having to think about your life and see it flashing before your eyes every time you go through," said James MacLean.

"There's cars trying to get into that single lane, I mean many of us are really really worried," said Sharon Leslie.

Possible solution

NDG City Councillor Peter McQueen agrees that the intersection is a problem, and wants the borough to build a bike and pedestrian bridge.

The Projet Montréal councillor said CP Rail is already planning to build a bridge for trains, and a cycle path can fit into the blueprints.

"I think Mayor Applebaum is going to see that the vast majority of the community wants it," said McQueen.

McQueen plans to join the cyclists at Monday night's council meeting.
