Quebec's Communauto car sharing service is hoping to expand its fleet of vehicles by asking individuals to donate their own cars to the program.
The service already rents at least 1,000 cars to its more than 21,000 members in Montreal, Quebec, Sherbrooke and Gatineau.
After 16 years in business, it will begin a pilot project later this summer to grow its business using the cars of others.
"The idea is that there [are] a lot of vehicles that are owned by people in Quebec, but they are used just … a few times in the day or a few times in the week," said Marco Viviani, Communauto's spokesman.
Owners could earn $30 per day plus mileage by renting their cars to Communauto, Viviani said.
They would also have to join the car-share service, he said — at a cost of between $37 and $360 plus tax per year, depending on the type of membership.
Owners would also have to buy insurance from La Capitale insurance group, which would cover the cost of potential damage.
