Gas prices shot up overnight on the island of Montreal to an average of $1.16 per litre, a 12 cents increase from Tuesday.

The trend seems mostly limited to Montreal.

In Montreal's suburbs prices were lower, ranging from $0.98 to $1.03.

Gas prices in Montreal are $0.11 higher than the minimum per litre cost required by Quebec's Energy Board.

Crude oil prices are on a slight decrease this week, trading above $82 US per barrel in Singapore.

Quebec's Outaouais region reported the lowest gas prices in the province on Wednesday, at $0.989 per litre.
