A Quebec doctors' group wants the federal government to airlift injured Haitians into Canada to receive medical treatment.

The battered Haitian health-care system simply isn't able to cope with the volume of patients with serious injures, said a spokesperson for CAMEDE, a group that represents foreign-trained doctors.

"Some of our doctors are going there, but they don't have an environment to be effective. That's the reason why you want especially heavily injured patients to be brought here," said Dr. Comlan Amouzo.

In Haiti, equipment and buildings are so badly damaged, doctors are having trouble treating seriously injured patients, said Amouzo.

Critically injured Haitian children should be the priority, he added.

The United States government has already been airlifting some injured Haitians to Miami hospitals, said Amouzo. He says the Canadian government should do the same, and send patients to hospitals in Quebec and across Canada.
