A Montreal design company has left its mark on the 124th floor of the tallest building in the world, inaugurated on Monday in Dubai.

The company, GSMprjct, designed a sky-high observatory and interpretation centre for the Burj Khalifa, Dubai's new, 828-metre skyscraper.

The 50-year-old firm also designed the interior of two rapid elevators in the building that operate at speeds reaching 35 km/h to service the observatory in less than a minute.

The Burj Khalifa is home to the world's first Armani Hotel, luxury offices and residences and will ultimately be the place of residence, work and leisure for a community of up to 12,000 people

GSMprjct was founded in 1958 by Quebec architect and designer Jacques Guillon, who has worked on iconic Montreal projects including pavillions at Expo 67 and the city's metro system.
