A 38-year-old man was found dead in his bunk Tuesday morning in a dormitory at the Old Brewery Mission, prompting a Montreal police investigation into what they are calling a suspicious death.

An autopsy has been ordered, and police are not ruling out death due to natural causes or a possible drug overdose.

The unidentified man was a member of the mission's transition program, which aims to help homeless people get back on their feet and eventually get a place of their own, said the organization's director general, Matthew Pearce.

The man was in the early stages of the program, having been there for just five days, Pearce said. He was living in a dormitory with beds for about 30 to 40 men at the mission's building on Clark Street near Old Montreal.

Pearce said the man had been volunteering in the shelter's kitchen on Monday and seemed fine.

Deaths at the Mission, which consists of five shelters, are not uncommon, said Pearce. There have been three others in the past two months — all related to medical issues.
