Tenants at a dilapidated apartment building in a Montreal borough finally have heat again in their units after the owner turned it off.

Michael Applebaum, the mayor of Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, stepped in earlier this week to force the owner of the building at 2290 Girouard Ave. to provide heat to the four remaining tenants.

Tenants discovered in early October that owner Yves Clement had ripped out the central heating system just as the weather turned colder. He said he was renovating the 36-unit building.

In a letter to residents, Clement said, "Please note that if you refuse to vacate the premises, you will be forced to live without heat or hot water."

The mayor said that if Clement did not restore the heat by the end of Tuesday, the city would take over the work and send him the bill.

Tenants with landlord issues should call Montreal's 311 hotline, Applebaum said.
