Ed Janiszewski has been the mayor of Dollard-des-Ormeaux since 1984, three times winning election by acclamation because no one ran against him.
In the upcoming municipal election, Janiszewski is facing an opponent for the job, and he doesn't like it.
"The problem is that by having an opponent, we are spending 15 to 20 thousand dollars of taxpayers' money," he said.
Janiszewski said hiring extra election staff, and sending out more election information is all a waste, because, his opponent, Shameem Siddiqui, can't win.
Janiszewski said he even appealed to Siddiqui before the deadline for filing papers.
"I called him in my office with his agent, and explained to him it was going to cost $15,000, and asked him, told him, I wanted him to consider that," Janiszewski said.
Siddiqui wasn't impressed.
"This is a democratic country, right. Everybody has a right to run," he said.
Siddiqui has unsuccessfully run twice for the federal New Democrats, and once for council in Dollard-des-Ormeaux.
Siddiqui said Janiszewski is not the king of Dollard and he doesn't want to see him run unopposed.
Voters get to decide who is right Nov.1.
