Hundreds of police officers, firefighters and paramedics gathered for a civic funeral service for Lévis Municipal Police Const. Mélanie Roy Tuesday in Quebec City.

Roy, 21, died in a traffic accident while responding to a call on Monday, Sept. 7.

Officers from across the country filed into Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola Church in Quebec City's Beauport district following a 40-minute long funeral procession.

The officer's uncle Pierre Roy said family members were extremely touched by the presence of police officers from across the country.

Lévis Police Chief Jean-François Roy recalled the young officer's joie de vivre, and radiant smile.

"[Her death] makes you think," said Valérie Lesage, who attended Quebec's national police academy with Roy.

"I'm going to live life to the fullest," Lesage said in French.

Roy had only been a member of the police force for three months when she lost control of her police cruiser, slamming into a concrete pillar supporting an overpass near Saint-Nicholas, South of Quebec City.
