A 24-year-old woman was run over and killed by a bus she was trying to catch at a Quebec City station late Thursday afternoon.

A witness, Gilles Daigle, said he saw the woman leaving the station carrying a can of pop, and screaming for the bus to stop as it was pulling out of the parking lot.

But, he said, she tripped and fell under the wheels.

Police are not releasing the woman's name until her family has been notified, but they said she is not from Quebec.

Daigle said that during the 25 years he drove a public transit bus, he saw at least five people die the same way.

He said people don't realize the driver cannot hear over the sound of the engine.

Sylvain Côté drives a taxi now, but used to be a nurse.

He went over to see if there was anything he could do for the woman. But, he said, it was obvious she was dead.

Côté said the woman's entire body and head had fallen under the wheels.

A spokeswoman for the bus company said the woman should never have been in the parking lot. She said it was an unfortunate accident, but it happened in a restricted area.

She said there are no plans to increase security in the area.
