A 17-year-old girl is in critical condition after falling off a car and hitting her head during a "car-surfing" stunt in Drummondville, Que., on Monday night.

"The girl was actually seated on the trunk of the car, outside of course, on the trunk of the car with another friend. There were two girls that were standing up on the roof while [another] girl was driving," said Sgt. Gregory Gomez del Prado of the provincial police.

He said an 18-year-old was driving the car at 20 kilometres an hour.

It's the second time in a month there has been a serious accident allegedly involving car surfing. Earlier this month, Kevin Ducharme, 38, died from his injuries after falling from the roof of an SUV in Montreal in late June.

Gomez del Prado said it's worrisome, but not a big trend.

"We're not seeing many, many incidents on our territory. But maybe the message that could be sent to young drivers is that this kind of behaviour, and this kind of challenge, is dangerous," he said.

City spokesman Raynald Forcier said this accident is a first of its kind for Drummondville, and he's sure city council will address the problem.

"In a few weeks they'll gather, and they'll hear about that accident and they'll do something, that's certain. Because that's a society phenomenon. Then the law reacts."

Forcier said he's not sure what can be done, but he says there has to be a clear signal of how dangerous car surfing is.

The teenage driver is being questioned by police and could face charges of criminal negligence and reckless driving.
