The United Nations published its reasons Tuesday for adding Montrealer Abousfian Abdelrazik to its list of blacklisted terror suspects.

It accused him of training at an al-Qaeda camp in Afghanistan and attempting to join Muslims fighting Russians in Chechnya. The allegations mirror similar charges posted on the U.S. Treasury Board website three years ago.

Abdelrazik has been living in forced exile in Sudan for six years.

The RCMP and the CSIS spy agency have dismissed the allegations against him and, just last week, Ottawa agreed to comply with a federal court order to let Abdelrazik return to Canada.

One of his lawyers, Yavar Hameed, said Tuesday he found it strange that after three years of silence, the UN would release its reasons for adding his client to the list now.

“It smacks of a kind of after-the-fact justification by the United Nations 1267 committee for its reason of existence and legitimacy,” said Hameed.

Hameed confirmed he's still in discussions with the federal government to set a date for Abdelrazik to come home, adding he’s confident that will happen before the court deadline of July 3.
