Montrealers of Iranian origin took to the streets Monday night to voice their dissent over results from the recent election in Iran.
Hundreds gathered on the steps of Place des Arts downtown, as protests in Iran continued against the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
The protest in Montreal was organized by students.
Some protesters, wearing green in support of Ahmadinejad's main opponent, Mir- Hossein Mousavi, say the election was stolen.
There have been reports that some protesters in Tehran have been shot. Montrealer Katayoun Shaybani said she feels helpless. "I can't do much from here.…I want the people to know what is happening in my country which is awful."
Many Montreal protesters travelled to Ottawa Friday to vote at the Iranian embassy. They said they hope the current unrest in Iran will force the country's parliament to oust Ahmadinejad.
Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has said he's ordered an investigation into the election results.
The official results of Friday's election gave Ahmadinejad 63 per cent of the vote and Mousavi just 34 per cent, which are figures Mousavi has dismissed as a "dangerous charade."
