Quebec is now using photo radar to try to reduce traffic violations.

Fifteen cameras have been set up in three regions of the province to catch drivers who speed, run red lights or commit other violations. They were put into use on Tuesday.

The cameras can be found in Montreal, the Monteregie, and Chaudiere-Appalaches regions.

A spokesperson for Transport Quebec said there will be signs to warn motorists they're entering a camera zone.

For the first three months, drivers caught on camera breaking the law will get a warning in the mail.

But after Aug. 19, motorists will be issued real tickets, the transport department said.

The cameras are a pilot project, and will operate until August 2010, when the government will decide whether to keep them.

There are 15 locations for the photo radar devices and red light cameras, including the following in Montreal:

• University Street southbound at Notre-Dame West Street (red light camera).
• Ste-Catherine Street eastbound at D'Iberville Street (red light camera).
• Décarie Boulevard northbound at Paré Street (red light camera).
• McDougall Road eastbound between Le Boulevard and Cedar Avenue (photo radar unit).
• Highway 15 southbound near the Atwater Street exit (photo radar unit).
• Notre-Dame Street between De Lorimier Street and Gonthier Avenue (mobile unit).
