A Montreal man who attacked four people in the Snowdon métro station – leaving one woman with permanent brain damage – will not serve any time in jail.

Peter Niedzielski, 31, was sentenced Monday to two years less a day in the community.

Quebec judge Isabelle Rheault rejected prosecutors' request for a five-year prison sentence.

Niedzielski went on a rampage in the métro station Sept. 13, 2005. He first struck a woman waiting on the platform in the face, threw her down and stomped on her head so hard she was in a coma for two weeks and suffered permanent disfigurement and brain damage.

He then shoved two other people and sexually assaulted another woman.

He pleaded guilty to assault charges in connection to all victims and spent six months in detention waiting for his trial before the Crown agreed to bail.

His defence lawyer argued Niedzielski has since undergone therapy to control his anger, stopped drinking and using drugs – factors that should be taken into consideration in his sentencing.
