Quebec provincial police are investigating a police shooting that put a Montreal man in hospital Sunday night.

The victim, who in his 20s, is in stable condition.

Montreal police officers said they confronted the man after responding to a 911 call from a woman who saw him walking with a knife on Dollard Street, in the borough of LaSalle.

Officers reported opening fire on the man after he refused to drop his knife and lunged at them, said Sûreté du Québec Sgt. Joyce Kemp.

The victim has no previous criminal record but does have a history of psychiatric illness, police said.

Provincial police took over the investigation as is required under Quebec law when police shoot a civilian.
