Jonathan Roy apologizes for his actions following a hockey fight in Saguenay, Que., in March 2008. (CBC) Jonathan Roy, the teenage son of NHL Hall of Fame member Patrick Roy, will go on trial next summer for assault after pummeling another goalie during a junior hockey game last year.

A judge set the date for the trial for July 13 in Saguenay, Que.

Roy, 19, has pleaded not guilty to the assault charge.

Last March, Roy was in net playing for the Quebec Remparts during a game against the Chicoutimi Saguenéens.

During the second period of the game, as the Remparts were losing 7-1, a brawl broke out between members of the two teams.

As the fight was going on, Roy skated across the entire surface of the ice to the opposing team's net and began pounding Chicoutimi goalie Robby Nadeau.

Nadeau, who did not fight back, covered his body as Roy hit him for more than 15 seconds.

Roy then skated away, lifting the middle fingers of both hands up to the crowd in the stands of the Georges-Vézina Centre.

Roy was suspended for seven games and fined $500. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League also suspended Patrick Roy, who is the team's coach, for five games.

Both clubs were fined $4,000 by the league.

Since the brawl, Roy's temper has put him back in the headlines several times.

Less than two weeks ago, Roy allegedly smashed a toilet and mangled a chair in a dressing room in Saint John, N.B., after letting in two goals.

Roy's father tended goal for the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche during his years in the NHL, winning two Stanley Cups with each franchise.

His son's trial is expected to last two days.

Jonathan Roy has also hired a new lawyer. Jean Asselin, a Quebec City lawyer, appeared in court on his client's behalf on Wednesday.
