More than 100,000 homes were without power Monday morning in the Montérégie region of Quebec, southwest of Montreal, where 6,000 homes were also in the dark, after Sunday night's violent windstorm caused by the tail end of Hurricane Ike.

Hydro-Québec expected to re-establish power sometime during the day.

Winds, accompanied by heavy rainfall, gusted between 60 and 90 kilometres an hour early Monday, but were expected die down later in the morning.

A heavy rainfall warning was also issued for the Quebec City region. Environment Canada expected up to 70 millimetres of rain would fall by the time Ike moved on.

Basements and garages were flooded in one neighbourhood in the Rivière-des-Prairies area of Montreal on Monday morning when the extra run-off caused a water main to break.

The excessive humidity also caused problems on Montreal's Metro system.

A spokeswoman for the Montreal Transit Corporation, Marianne Rouette, said older trains were having trouble coping with the humidity, and there were some delays in service during morning rush hour.
