Parti Québécois leader Pauline Marois is recovering in hospital after undergoing emergency surgery for a burst appendix.

Marois was taken to Montreal's Lakeshore Hospital Sunday morning after suffering from stomach aches and nausea.

Doctors initially thought she had food poisoning or a benign infection, but when her condition worsened through the day she was diagnosed with appendicitis.

The surgery went well without complication, said Marois' press officer Marie Barrette.

Marois, 59, is recovering in hospital and will meet with doctors in coming days to determine how long she'll need to recover.

The PQ leader had been scheduled to speak at the campaign launch for Bloc Québécois Gilles Duceppe on Sunday night in Montreal.
