(Peter McCabe/Canadian Press)The girl was riding on the St-Laurent Boulevard sidewalk near Crémazie Street around 11:15 a.m. ET with her mother when she was struck by the transport truck.

The driver was not at fault, said Montreal police Const. Laurent Gingras.

"She lost control of her bike. Unfortunately, she fell to the street, [and] the tractor-trailer was passing on St-Laurent and crushed her," he said.

The girl was declared dead on the scene as her mother watched.

"The mother's state, you can understand — she was in deep shock, and was taken to hospital," said Guy St-Pierre, a spokesman for Urgences Santé.

The girl's father, who arrived on the scene shortly after the accident was also taken to hospital in shock, as was the truck driver.

The truck will be tested for any possible mechanical failure, but no charges will be laid against the driver.

St-Laurent Boulevard was closed in both directions between Crémazie and Liège streets, but reopened before evening rush hour.

Police aren't releasing the girl's name.
