The City of Côte St.-Luc in Montreal is expanding its household compost program after running what it calls a successful pilot project this year.
The demerged city in Montreal's west end experimented with an organic waste pickup program for 500 houses last year that Coun. Steven Erdelyi says reduced garbage dramatically.
"Of all the organic waste, about 50 per cent of it is now going to compost," he said. "Before we started the pilot project we were at three percent."
Starting in September, every house in Côte St.-Luc will get a large brown bin for organic waste, including yard foliage and food scraps.
The first pick up is scheduled Oct. 12, 2008.
