A young mother whose baby was found in a Quebec City trash bin this week has been charged with manslaughter.

Marie-Ève Bastille, 22, was originally charged with negligence after police found her newborn daughter behind her apartment building in Quebec City's Limoilou district.

An autopsy report prompted authorities to charge Bastille with manslaughter, and with hiding a body.

The maximum penalty for manslaughter is a life sentence with no chance of parole for 10 years.

Bastille will remain in police custody until her next court appearance, which is scheduled for Sept. 22.
