Merchants in Montreal's gay village hope a pedestrian-only experiment will boost business this summer.

Starting Tuesday, Ste-Catherine Street between Berri and Papineau streets will be closed to cars, trucks and buses.

The city has closed the street to cars for special events in the past, but this is the first time it will happen for an extended period of time.

"I think it is going to bring noise, and it is going to be a pain in the ass, but it's going to be more good than bad," said Tyler Clark, a clothing store manager on Ste-Catherine Street. "It's going to bring tourism, it's going to bring fun, it's going to bring a good energy to the neighbourhood."

In the past, the same section of Ste. Catherine Street has been closed during Pride Week.

The closure is in effect until Labour Day weekend.
