As a Belgian man awaits his arraignment in a Quebec courtroom on Monday, news of his arrest and allegations of luring a 13-year-old girl to a Montreal hotel are causing a stir back home.

Media have caught on to the story of the 32-year-old, who faces a charge of luring the Montreal teenager to a room in a gritty Montreal neighbourhood on Friday night.

Belgian federal police told the Canadian Press on Sunday they could not comment on the man's arrest and directed queries to the local Crown prosecutor, but one officer did say the suspect's story had made the news in that country.

The Crown could add additional charges depending on the evidence submitted, Montreal police Const. Raphaël Bergeron said Sunday.

"Investigators are still working on the case and the man remains detained," Bergeron said.

Police said for now there is no evidence that the girl was sexually assaulted, and she appeared unharmed, Bergeron said.

Montreal police said the suspect is unknown to them and indications are he may have arrived in Canada as late as Friday.

The accused's name has been withheld until he is formally charged.

However, the accused's father told La Dernière Heure, a French-language daily newspaper in Belgium, that he is shocked by the turn of events surrounding his son.

"My son is a computer specialist with a private company in Brussels. He left for Canada without buying a return ticket. We don't know what his intentions were, despite the letter he left us Wednesday in our mailbox while we were out," said the man's father, a teacher in the same area where his son is from.

"We do not know if our son will be coming back to Belgium in the immediate future."

Montreal officers are working with Belgian police and Interpol on the case, Bergeron said.

Bergeron said officers found evidence on the girl's computer that she had been chatting online with a man for several months, Bergeron said.

Belgian police raided the man's home, as well as that of his parents, and said they found similar correspondence on his computer confirming the link.

Among the several thousand pages of chats, police were also able to find a photograph of a suspect from an online profile, which they used to track him down.

The girl's parents reported her missing when she didn't return home after school.

Officers visited hotels across the city searching for the pair. The two were found in the early morning hours Saturday after an employee at the hotel recognized them.

The girl has since been reunited with her parents.
