Hundreds of Céline Dion fans in Quebec City were disappointed Friday when they failed to get free tickets to a summer 400th anniversary concert.
Organizers for the Aug. 22 concert gave away 4,000 tickets at a Quebec City mall Friday morning to the thrill of many fans.
The giveaway's surprise location was announced Friday morning at 9:45 a.m. on a private, French-language radio station.
Nicole Hamel, a long-time Dion fan, was frustrated after walking away empty-handed when the tickets ran out.
"We spent fuel and the time and people ran … all over the place," she told CBC. "I think it's a marketing [ploy], and I'm a bit mad."
Doriane Lacroix said she took the day off work to try to get tickets after showing up at two other ticket giveaways that were cancelled. She says she blames the concert organizers for nurturing false hopes.
Other unlucky fans crowded the front of the line and yelled at staff handing out the tickets.
Organizers said they did their best to be fair.
About 100,000 tickets are available for the show and are being distributed throughout the province as part of promotions for Quebec City's 400th anniversary celebrations.
Dion will perform at the Plains of Abraham on August with several other Quebec performers.
