Spring flooding could cause problems for homeowners along the banks of 25 different rivers in Quebec, according to Marc Lavallée, of the province's Civil Security Department.
"The potential is there this year for heavy floods, but that doesn't mean we're [going to] have it, [because] it's the weather conditions that make the real difference," he said.
Specifically, he said, it would take four consecutive days and nights of warm weather to cause problems.
Barbara Eimer's home in Rivière-des-Prairies is just steps from the river, where it separates Montreal from Laval.
There was still ice along the banks of parts of the river Wednesday morning. Other sections were flowing freely.
Eimer hopes the river behaves this year.
"So far, it's been good. I cannot complain. Mind you, the water rises up and, shouldn't go higher," she said
The cooler than normal March has kept a lot of the snow and ice on the ground across the province.
Lavallée said the water flow on the rivers is up, but there is nothing alarming right now.
He said people should be ready if they live in a flood-risk area.
"Be prepared to have their essential goods to the higher level in the house, instead of leaving them in the basement."
He also said people should be ready to leave their homes in case the flooding gets really bad.
