The wife of Said Jaziri, a controversial Muslim cleric scheduled for deportation Monday, did not go to the airport for his departure.

Mohammed Alaoui — one of the imam's supporters — said Jaziri's Canadian-born wife Nancy-Ann Adams is in the late stages of pregnancy and has been ordered by her doctor to stay in a Laval hospital.

Jaziri was scheduled to be deported on Monday.

CBC's French-language service reported that Jaziri boarded a plane at midday Monday.

But a spokesman for the Canada Border Services Agency said the agency will only confirm the cleric has left the country once he has arrived in Tunisia.

The Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations has urged Immigration Minister Diane Finley to stay Jaziri's deportation.

Amnesty International Canada believes Jaziri is at serious risk of being tortured on his return, adding that Tunisia has a dubious human rights record.

Jaziri is accused of lying on his refugee application, and his request for permanent residency was turned down this fall.

The Muslim cleric led the Al-Qods mosque in Montreal.
