Montrealers will soon be able to rent bicycles to get around the island, city officials said.

Montreal is the latest city to experiment with short-term bike rentals, after Paris and Vienna launched similar programs to resounding success.

The city and Stationnement de Montréal will spend $15 million to set up the pilot project, which will put 2,400 rental bikes on the road by next fall at 300 stations, mainly in the downtown core and nearby neighbourhoods.

The bikes will be available for short-term rental at minimal cost, explained André Lavallée, the city of Montreal executive member in charge of transportation. The bikes will be outfitted with meters that will accept payment cards.

The bikes will be winterized and equipped with anti-theft devices.

In Paris, the "Vélib" program — a rental bike pilot project launched last summer — is a hit with urbanites who log an average of 50,000 rentals a day, according to French figures.
