The suspect, 15, was arrested on Monday and appeared in court Tuesday. He was charged with first-degree murder and will be back in court Sept. 19.
Under Canada's Youth Criminal Justice Act, the boy cannot be named.
Francesca's mother, Josée St-Pierre, is holding a memorial service for her daughter Thursday evening.
Francesca disappeared on Saturday during a trip to the library from the group home where she was staying.
She suffered from Tourette's syndrome and required constant supervision, which is why officials at the group home called 911 even though she had been missing for only about an hour.
Her mother told CBC News on Tuesday that Francesca knew the boy charged with killing her.
