A man and a woman from Montreal have been identified as the victims who died Monday aboard a private plane that crashed into a runway at the airport in Kingston, Ont.

Jennifer Hayward, 44, and Joshua Lazar, 59, both of Montreal, crashed around 3:15 p.m. ET,  just after their plane took off from the airport, Kingston Police Const. Michael Menor said on Tuesday.

"The plane climbed to approximately 200, 250 feet [about 61 to 76 metres], made a sudden sharp turn and plunged into the ground, impacting, and exploded instantly," he told CBCNews.ca, adding that police do not know who was piloting the plane.

A ball of flame reportedly could be seen from across the airfield.

Menor said the heat made it impossible for police officers to get near the plane until fire crews could put out the blaze.

The red and white Avid aircraft was supposed to land back in St. Lazare, Que., just outside of Montreal, on Monday night.

The couple made a stop in Kingston, where they bought just under 70 litres of fuel.

On Tuesday, officers from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada continued their investigation into the cause of the crash.
