About 80,000 people on Montreal's South Shore will spend the day without access to drinking water because of an electrical problem at a regional pumping station.

A spokesman for the Richelieu Valley inter-municipal water works said the pumping station's electrical system has broken down, shutting down the water supply to about 150,000 homes.

Many schools and businesses in St-Hilaire, Béloeil, St-Basile-le-Grand, McMasterville and Otterburn Park are closed for the day because of the water shortage.

Some local municipalities are handing out bottled water and have sent out tanker trucks full of water.

Repair crews are working on the electrical circuit and hope to have it fixed by the end of Friday, said a spokesman for the water processing plant.
