A Montreal doctor who went to the Supreme Court of Canada to fight Quebec's health insurance laws has launched a private referral service that connects paying patients with medical care from doctors and specialists.

For $40, Quebecers can seek medical referrals through Jacques Chaouilli's new brokerage firm, the Chaouilli Group.

Any medical care that ensues has to be paid for through private insurance or out of pocket.

Chaouilli made a name for himself when he challenged the Quebec government on health insurance laws and forced the province to change its policy on medical wait times and private care.

His new business is legal even though doctors made available through the referral service may also work in the public medical system.

Chaouilli is relying on a section of the Health Insurance Act which allows doctors to provide additional medical care in some conditions as long as they don't decrease their case load in the public network.

He said he hopes the brokerage firm will help ease the burden on Quebec's health care system by reducing wait times.
