Dropping a coffee cup or cigarette pack wrapper on the sidewalk could cost a pretty penny as Montreal officials get set to crackdown on people who litter.

Starting Tuesday, people caught littering can be fined from $60 to $1,000, Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay announced.

The new policy comes as spring unfolds, unearthing unsightly piles of cigarette butts, hamburger wrappers and soda cans in alleys, parking lots and streets.

Montreal looks dirty and the city won't tolerate it anymore, Tremblay said.

"We will fine people, and as a result, no more Mr. Nice Guy. It's finished."

Cleanliness inspectors have been ordered to issue tickets instead of warnings, and they will patrol all of Montreal's boroughs, Tremblay said.

The fines will vary depending on the area and the severity of the infraction. Dropping a soft-drink can on the ground isn't as serious as spray-painting graffiti on a building, for example.

The mayor also pledged to install more ashtrays and garbage cans.
