One of Quebec City's two movie theatres to screen English-language films has closed for good.

The Star Cité in Sainte-Foy closed its doors on Monday.

The cinema's owners said financial reasons have forced them to shut down operations at the city's largest film venue.

"This is a theatre that costs the company a lot of money each month just to maintain, and operate, and in terms of controllable costs and uncontrollable costs," said Mauro Zampino, a spokesman with Cinéma Fortune, Star Cité's owner.

The movie theatre industry is undergoing a profound shift across North America as the market adjusts to new media platforms, and Quebec isn't immune to those forces, Zampino said.

"There's a lot of talk about home videos, DVDs, digital screens, plasmas, and so on," competing with big movie theatres, Zampino told CBC.

But Zampino hasn't given up hope.

"There's always going to be a group of people, a market out there that's going to want to come out and enjoy a good movie experience in a theatre," he said.
