The Quebec coroner's office is investigating the death of a 51-year-old snowboarder on the slopes of Mont Orford in the Eastern Townships on Saturday.

Francis Beaulieu, originally from Montreal, veered off a groomed run and crashed into a tree at the Mont Orford ski hill.

"He was an experienced skier. He was wearing a helmet. The ski conditions were good. So he went off course. Was it an accident, a bad manoeuvre, a deliberate stunt or did something go wrong?" speculated Yves Denis, a captain with regional police.

The coroner's office will perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Beaulieu is the second skiing victim this season.

In mid-January, a 41-year-old man died at the Bromont ski hill after leaving a groomed trail.
