Merchants on Montreal's Parc Avenue are taking their fight over the street's name to court.
The Parc Avenue Merchants' Association has hired two prominent human-rights lawyers to help prepare their case.
Merchants and local residents were left fuming after Montreal's city council approved a plan in November to rename Parc Avenue after former Quebec premier Robert Bourassa.
Opponents to the street's new name have now asked Julius Grey and May Chiu to defend their cause at the provincial level.
Grey will represent merchants at the Quebec Toponymy Committee, which will decide whether the city's proposal to rename the street has merit.
Chiu is preparing to sue the City of Montreal on behalf of Parc Avenue's merchants and residents, the association indicated Thursday.
The class-action lawsuit could include thousands of people who signed several online petitions leading up to the council vote on the name change.
The lawsuit will question whether city hall followed its own dictates on public consultation.
Parc Avenue's name change is scheduled to come up at the Toponymy Committee in mid-January. It's not clear when the class-action suit will be launched.
