Quebec provincial police are investigating the suspicious death of a newborn baby boy found Sunday in a rural wooded area near the Laurentian town of Sainte-Sophie.

Investigators with the Sûreté du Québec's homicide division were called to the scene after the infant's corpse was discovered in the woods northwest of Montreal.

Police located the infant's mother and she was being questioned on Monday, along with several other people, said SQ spokeswoman Chantal Mackels.

Investigators haven't released the infant's age or gender, and are unsure as to whether the baby was alive or dead when it was dumped.

Police won't say whether they have any suspects.

An autopsy will be performed on Monday in Montreal.
