Smoking is banned on the property of all Quebec high schools, primary schools and nurseries, starting Friday.

The government's goal is to target teen smokers, and to help prevent children from starting to smoke in the first place.

Some students at Westmount High School said it won't cause them to butt out.

"I think it's pretty stupid because people are just [going to] go across the street, and smoke anyway. They might as well make a place in the school so we don't disturb the public, and [don't] pollute," one student said.

Under the new rules, a student caught smoking on school property can be fined $87. A school that doesn't enforce the smoking ban can be fined $530.

The government says it's giving schools the resources to enforce the ban.
