Montreal police officer Benoît Guay will remain behind bars as he awaits trial. A judge denied bail to the officer who's facing 22 charges in a string of sexual assaults in the Laval area.

Guay displayed little emotion as the judge read out his decision. The police officer had hoped to await trial at his father's house.

"Justice is supposed to be blind," said Philip Schneider, Guay's lawyer. "Justice should not have taken into account the fact that he's a police officer in deciding whether or not to release him."

Guay is accused in the attacks of seven women in Laval, St. Jérome and Terrebonne.

His arrest played out on television and radio newscasts and on the front pages of newspapers. His lawyer insists that played a part in the judge's decision.

"There's a huge media coverage and it has an impact, and the judge has to live with that," Schneider said.

Guay is expected to meet with his lawyer in the next few days to decide whether or not to appeal the bail decision. He will be back in court March 2 for his next hearing.
